Stinging Eyes!

I had these same feelings last year as I was training for this 25 K.  Overall, the month of March was a great running accomplishment though!

Like the “beard”?

Flat Would Be Nice!

I am having a difficult time finding a nice flat run on the NW side of Grand Rapids.  Today I ran 12.1 miles and I guess I made the mistake of running down to the river because I had to climb out of the valley of darkness.  The run felt nice, but boy am I sore until I stretch afterwards.  Next week I will do a hilly 10 mile run and the following a 13 mile flat long run.

This past week I did some speed training at the end of my short runs.  This made a big difference in my performance today.  I have been coming back in after my runs downtown and running a 6:30 minute mile on the treadmill.  I do this because my goal is to run a 5 K under 20 minutes and this is my goal pace.

Service Run Do-over!

My car needed service AGAIN, but I again turned the trip into a nice hilly run.  The time it takes me to run these hilly routes has been longer because I am clearly not in the appropriate shape for the riverbank run.  My plan is to keep these long runs hilly until the race.  It has been nice being off work this week to get into some longer distances.

Service Run

My car required some service today so I dropped it off downtown and ran home 6.6 miles.  This run was so frustrating because I couldn’t find a good podcast so I kept having to focus on that AND rock salt kept getting in my shoes.  I only stopped once to empty my shoes, but it was irritating because one of my “rules” is to never stop running during a run.  Obvious exceptions are stopping at lights and sharp crystals of NaCl slicing into my foot.

Forgetful

Sometimes the mind blocks out bad memories like the pain associated with 10+ mile runs. My body is genuinely sore after my 11 mile run this afternoon. It felt nice during the run, but afterwards my weak points certainly hurt. I definitely need to build up to 15.5 miles for the riverbank run. Today my route ran the difficult part of the riverbank run – that Butterworth road is pretty darn hilly. My body is certainly in better shape this year than it was last year.
